Pear + apple crumble with ginger

So my pears were in grave danger of being an overripe mess (how do they go from rock-hard to almost too ripe so quickly? gah!), and to salvage them I decided to bake a little crumble. Just a quick one, perfect for the two of us on a wintry night. The ginger made it pleasantly pink, and imparted just enough unusual flavour to lift what could be a pretty boring pear-apple standard combination into something a little out of the ordinary. Who wouldn't want that?!

By all means double this for extra servings, but this was just right for what I wanted.

Ingredients
2 medium pears, cored and chopped
2 small apples, cored and chopped fine (I didn't peel mine)
1 tsp grated fresh ginger
juice 1/2 lemon
sprinkle of brown sugar
sprinkle of cinnamon
sprinkle of ground cloves
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons butter, melted

Directions:

1. Place chopped apples and pears in a small baking dish.

2. Stir in the ginger, lemon, sugar, cinnamon and cloves.

3. In a separate bowl, mix oats, flour, sugar and butter. Spread over the fruit.

4. Bake at 180C until cooked through and brown on top, 20-30 minutes.

  2. I made a very similar oat crumble last night, using rhubarb, apple and sultanas, and put the cinnamon and cloves into the crumble mix rather than with the fruit. Yummo winter dessert.

  3. Yum! I always forget to put cinnamon in the crumble mix, but much prefer my cloves in with the apples. I really should buy some more rhubarb too!

  4. Super yum, just made this using 2 big pears that both had manky bits that needed cutting off, no cloves 'cause I don't like them much and slightly reduced amounts of everything else, particularly the butter and sugar. D and I were both pigs over it and he doesn't normally like pears :)

  5. Haha I totally tried it with less butter, but the crumble wouldn't crumble! Glad you like it, my pears were manky too. And had some toddler teeth marks in them :)
