I love this hat pattern the most - the wool ply and the hook size work really well together to make a hat that sits just right. Once I start experimenting with smaller hooks for bigger hats I'm always slightly miffed that they come out just that little bit different.
This hat is super, super easy. One step up from a granny square, I swear! It's just instead of squares, you're working in circles. Simple double crochet stitches. Yay!

Once you nail the first few stitches, you can make anything. I've got so many ideas that I have to write them all down because I rarely get the actual time to make things!
If you're a beginner, this will explain the abbreviations, and this is helpful to explain what the stitches look like.
Anyhoo, this hat is for about 3-6 month baby heads. Veggie Baby is 8 months old in this pic so as you can see, it's a bit small for her.
You will need
4.5mm hook
2 balls 8 ply baby wool in contrasting colours.
Pattern:
1. ch 5, join to form ring.
2. ch 1, 10 dc in ring, sl st to join.
3 and 4. ch 1, 2 dc in same stitch, 2 dc in each stitch around, sl st to join.
5 - 13. ch 1, 1 dc in same stitch, 1 dc in each stitch all the way around. sl st to join. continue as long as you need to make the hat the depth you want. I did 9 rows.
14 (brim). ch 1, 2dc in same stitch. 2dc in each stitch around, sl st to join.
15. ch 1, 1 dc in same stitch. 1 dc in each stitch around, sl st to join. extend for a wider brim.
16. In contrasting colour, ch 1, sc in same stitch. sc in each stitch around. sl st to join.
17. *hdc in first stitch, 2dc in next stitch, hdc in next stitch*. continue this pattern all the way around so you have a little wavy end to your brim.
